CHARACTER INFORMATION

Name: The Dutch East Indies (officially) and Indonesia (unofficially)
Age: 800+ years old, but she looks around 16.
Subject taught: n/a
Canon: AXIS POWERS HETALIA & write up of her history here.
Canon point: Dutch Ethical Policy (1925)

Personality:
Since she still under colonial rule, she is somewhat reluctantly obedient to the Netherlands. Sometimes she likes how he helps her, and sometimes she thinks he's running her country and trying to make her a Netherlands 2.0.During this time period, she's learning a lot about the outside world and modernizing. Because the Netherlands changed its goals in Indonesia, their relationship changed. She's grateful he's teaching her about the world, helping her own people, etc., but at the same time she's becoming much more self efficient, an independent thinker, and forming a national identity that is separate from Netherlands' goals for her. She knows during this time period she has to grow up, but she is scared deep down. She's know the Netherlands for so long through good and bad times, so declaring her independence will outright ruin any future of a friendship (so she thinks). She's stuck in the limbo of waiting, and sometimes she does push her limitations the Netherlands has set for her. She's demanding to be treated more as an equal rather than just a little child of a nation. At the same time, she still is naive and doesn't know what the outside world is really like. She wants to know, though, good or bad.

She represents the average Indonesian person since she does represent her people, the Indonesians. There are so many different types of Indonesian people, and with all those culture and differences impacts her views, beliefs, her habits (good and bad) and overall her personality. She's polite to business partners and friends, but can be shy at first to those she does not know well. Once she gets to know someone, she will open up and even become rather talkative. She has a bad habit of gossiping and name dropping, always looking to impress to get ahead in the business world. She's proud of who she is, but she mostly keeps it to herself unless it involves one of her siblings/neighbors. She's proud of the accomplishments of her people, and she likes where credit is due (see Malaya (Malaysia) and Indonesia fighting over who invented batik and certain food items). She is a hypocrite, though, sometimes taking more credit than she deserves. A background mischief maker, Indonesia still has a bit of a habit of causing troubles through being disorganized, being a little too ambitious, and getting into rather petulant fights with her siblings, especially Malaya (Malaysia). She likes to stick her nose in other people's business, writing it off as a general interest in the person (all the while, she hopes to find a way to use the person so she can benefit).

She does have a lot of good qualities to her, though. As mentioned before, she's polite and friendly, often showing a great amount of hospitality to those who visit her. She loves guests, new cultures, and trying new things from different nations and people. While a lot of bad things have happened to her, she now takes those difficulties positively and uses them in a positive light. She doesn't hold grudges long, and she has forgiven the past actions of many nations during the colonial and wartime era. She's optimistic, always looking towards the future for economic and social opportunities. When you push her enough, she works very hard, sometimes hurting herself in the process. Like a lot of South East Asian nations, she is on her own time schedule known as "rubber time" (lit. translations) which means "stretching" or "extending time" AKA being late a lot.

There are a lot of little aspects that make Indonesia unique. She's one of the best cooks of South East Asia, making very spicy and tasty dishes. She loves cooking, and she will often bring food for friends when coming over. She's always find time to take a snack break, so of course she has food with her almost at all times. She's been influenced by China, India, and the Netherlands when it comes to food. She also has a weird love for brightly colored rice (see green, purple, yellow, and blue rice of Indonesia and Malaysia). She also seemed to pick up a weird habit of liking cheese and chocolate together. It's easy to say she has some special tastes. She loves all the different forms of expression her people do. Such expressions include batik, shadow puppets, dances, and music. She loves seeing performances of the Ramayana. She also loves a lot of exotic flowers, fruits, animals, and maybe just nature in general.

She was heavily impacted by the Netherlands, and part of his personality has been embossed on her, to say. She's learned how to talk business and run things economically because of him, but sometimes (okay, maybe a lot the time) she isn't as good as the Netherlands is at business and negotiating. She has very strong ties to him, often sharing culture and food together. While they do fight, they can get along rather well and Indonesia knows he's the person that knows her the best.

* I'd like to note others would call her the Dutch East Indies, but she would call herself Indonesia. So basically Nusantara = Dutch East Indies = Indonesia.
